Dysregulated Nervous System or Mineral Deficiency?

Updated: Jan 10

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

When it comes to minerals and our nervous system, we definitely have a chicken and egg situation. Symptoms of a dysregulated nervous system look very similar to mineral depletion or deficiency. Why is this? Because they can each lead to each other!

Symptoms include:

  • low energy

  • difficulty focusing

  • digestive issues

  • hormone issues

  • anxiety and worry

  • trouble falling or staying asleep

  • irritability, short-temperedness, and impatience

What causes nervous system dysregulation?

Nervous system dysregulation can happen when we’re in the fight/flight/freeze mode for too long.

This branch of our autonomic nervous system is called the sympathetic nervous system in contrast to our parasympathetic side, which is associated with rest/digest/repair.

So when we are always “on” or stressed out, this quickly drains our mineral reserves which are needed to make energy, absorb nutrients, detox, produce and balance hormones, digest food and more.

These stressors can also be from other sources like:

  • being a new or veteran mom, having a baby, nursing your baby, and/or chasing around a toddler.

  • having a copper or mercury imbalance

  • having a diet that doesn’t contain enough of the right nutrients to properly nourish your body

The most common nutrient deficiencies brought on by stress or leading to poor mental health include iron, omega-3s, vitamin D, b vitamins, sodium, potassium and magnesium.

So what are three things you can do to support your nervous system?

  1. Uncover the hidden stressors that are depleting you and/or causing the dysfunctions.

  2. Nourish your body with quality food, supplementation, rest, and sleep.

  3. Implement nervous system healing through chiropractic care, counseling, exercise, or doing things you love.

If you or even your children have difficulty regulating your mood, emotions or response to stress, it’s time to look at your mineral levels! An HTMA test a great way to do that and get a better understanding of what is going on with your body and how to support it best.
